Alberta This Week

What to Expect

The second debate of the United Conservative Party’s leadership race will be held tonight at 6 pm. The two-hour forum will give leadership hopefuls another opportunity to address the issues that matter to voters and to promote their respective policy platforms. The topics they emphasize and the rhetorical tactics used will be hot topics, although they might be overshadowed by the quarterly fiscal update that is expected to be released tomorrow. This will be the first update on the province’s finances since Budget 2022 and will reflect the continued increase in resource revenue. A larger than projected surplus shouldn’t be a surprise.

The Week That Was

Premier Jason Kenney has announced that Associate Minister of Red Tape Reduction Tanya Fir will also be filling the position of Minister for Jobs, Economy, and Innovation after the unexpected resignation of Doug Schweitzer.

From August 29 to September 1, Minister of Energy, Sonya Savage will be in Norway advocating for Alberta at the Offshore Northern Seas (ONS) Conference, a global initiative to lower emissions and promote sustainability.

The provincial government will provide $5.2 million in grant funding over two years to support crime prevention efforts through eligible programs and projects.

COVID-19 booster dose eligibility has expanded by Health Canada to now include the use of Pfizer (Comirnaty) vaccine for booster doses in children aged five to 11.
