Alberta This Week

What to Expect

The details of a tentative agreement between the Alberta Medical Association (AMA) and the Government of Alberta will be much discussed. Doctors still have to vote on the deal, but the AMA has endorsed it. With healthcare capacity being a top-of-mind issue for many voters, the story will have political ramifications throughout the week.

As will the UCP leadership contest. There are 22 days left until final voting and the announcement of the winner, so campaigns are getting into the final days. Mail-in ballots must be received by the party on October 3, a mere 19 days away.

The Week That Was

Alberta is expected to schedule an additional 1,350 surgeries in central Alberta and 1,250 procedures in the south zone as part of the effort to reduce surgery wait-times.

Premier Jason Kenney announced the Attorney General has filed a notice with the Federal Court of Canada regarding the decision of the federal government to include “plastic manufactured items” as “toxic substances” under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act.
