Saskatchewan and Manitoba This Week

What to Expect

Saskatchewan

Trade and Export Development Minister Jeremy Harrison is leading a Saskatchewan trade delegation to Vietnam this week. The province opened a trade and investment office in Vietnam in February. With the fall sitting of the legislature wrapped up, work will continue for the government as the Treasury Board progresses the 2023-24 budget. The spring sitting in Saskatchewan will resume on March 6, 2023, with the budget tentatively set for March 22, 2023.

Manitoba

The byelection in Kirkfield Park wraps up today. This byelection will be an important bellwether, and much will be made about the results. However, with a year until the next election, reading too much into the results may also be a feature of the week ahead in Manitoba politics.

The Week That Was

Saskatchewan

Saskatchewan Affordability Tax Credit (SATC) payments have been mailed out to eligible Saskatchewan taxpayers as part of the government’s Four-Point Affordability Plan.

More than $11.9 million has been raised from the Government of Saskatchewan’s crown petroleum and natural gas public offering, which brings this year’s revenue for the province up to more than $52 million.

Manitoba

Jim Carr, MP for Winnipeg South Centre since 2015, passed away on Monday after battling multiple myeloma and kidney failure since 2019. Carr was a vocal advocate for Winnipeggers, Manitobans, and Canadians throughout his tenure. He was pleased to see his bill, “Building a Green Prairie Economy,” pass through the House of Commons just last week.

Premier Stefanson stood alongside her provincial counterparts and asked once again for a meeting between the federal government and the provinces to increase health transfers from 22 to 35 per cent.
